Two Ears and One Mouth-Listen Up!

It was March 1995 and I was finally earning enough money to upgrade the old Nissan Sentra I’d been driving around. I wanted to buy a new car on my own and negotiate my own price. I liked my first Nissan, so why not buy another one? I hit the road wearing my best “I am woman” attitude and went to check out the new cars.

The first dealership I walked into had the exact car I wanted, in the color, trim package and all. But that dealership didn’t get to sell me a car. Why? The salesman didn’t listen to my needs as a car buyer. He asked all the right questions, but didn’t really listen to my answers. Based on his questions he knew I was single, no kids and looking to get into a car that showed I could afford a vehicle with some luxury. He showed me the right car, but not the right features. The first two items he pointed out were the child restraint seat in the back and the “tops in class” head room inside. By the way, I’m five feet, two inches – unless I was looking at a clown car, headroom isn’t exactly an issue for me.

The New SilverTech Website

So I really have another topic I was going to put some thoughts into this time around…but, with all of the work and effort the team’s done in putting together this new website for us, I changed my mind at the last minute.

Having said that, I want to start my first “official” post on our much anticipated new website with a big “THANK YOU” to the dedicated SilverTech team players who have dedicated tireless hours during the day and night on putting our 2010 piece of web real estate together for us. You know who you guys are and I want to thank you officially here in our blog area!

Vegas Baby

Since 2001, SilverTech has partnered with the Miss America Organization to be their official web services and technology vendor. Every year come late January, the nationally televised pageant kicks into high gear, and SilverTech transforms into an on-site extension of the Miss America Organization’s staff.

So on January 28th I hopped onto a plane headed for sunny Las Vegas, Nevada, to work on a website dedicated to 53 beautiful women… things could certainly be worse.

Ground Hog Day

So today is Groundhog Day and I guess Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow which means he is predicting at least six more weeks of winter. I’m not sure why it makes the news headlines each year in New England because no matter what he sees we pretty much have winter here through end of March.

Anyway, listening about this furry little oracle on my way to work made me think about ‘Groundhog Day’ the movie – one of my all time favorites starring a very funny Bill Murray. If you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely worth adding to your Netflix queue. Without ruining it for you, it’s about a weatherman that gets “stuck” in time on Groundhog Day. Each day he wakes up and it is February 2nd, Groundhog Day all over again. No matter how he changes the day’s events, the outcome seems to be the same and then the next day it starts all over again. Until one day he finally realizes he doesn’t only need to change the events but also his attitude – only then is he able to progress to the next day. OK, so maybe that did ruin the movie but if you haven’t seen it in the fifteen or so years since it’s been released, it’s likely you probably wouldn’t anyway.

SilverTech Ensures No Service Interruptions, while Miss America Website Breaks Bandwidth Records

Las Vegas, Nevada- February 1, 2010 – The Miss America organization set a new organizational record for website activity during its nationally televised pageant broadcast last Saturday night. For the seventh year in a row, SilverTech, a national digital marketing agency, successfully maintained the website and managed multiple servers during its annual competition event, therefore allowing the site to hit record breaking requests without any service outages.

SilverTech staff was on site to offer support and live web updates during the organization’s busiest night of the year. In order to prepare for the spike in bandwidth, SilverTech’s IT staff arranged a bank of servers a week before the pageant was to be televised. The website, which normally is housed in SilverTech’s hosting facility in Waltham, MA was expanded to additional servers to allow for twelve hundred times the normal amount of activity.
